DENTON - Sam Houston State's final game in the University of North Texas Mean Green Classic was canceled due to wet grounds Sunday.
Next action for the Bearkat softball team will be a doubleheader Wednesday with Texas Southland at 4 p.m. in the Bearkat softball complex.
Sam Houston State's bats exploded for 13 hits as the Bearkat softball team ended an eight-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 9-2 victory over Missouri State.
Junior shortstop Hailey Wiginton, senior first baseman Amy Brown and sophomore second baseman Erin Burford lead Sam Houston hitting through the first two weeks of the season.
Wiginton has hit safely in nine of Sam Houston's 10 contests so far, rolling up 12 hits in 30 at bats for a .400 batting average. Brown is batting .310 and leads the squad in RBIs with five including two home runs and a double. Burford, who has started five games, has made the most of her time at the plate hitting .417 with five hits in 12 at bats.
Morgan Mikulin, Tori Benavidez and Tomi Garrison have shared pitching duties with the senior Mikulin handling much of the work. Mikulin has totaled 20 strike outs working more than 35 innings. Benavidez threw a two-hitter in her last outing against Drake. Garrison saw her first time in the circle this past weekend in Denton after returning from a preseason injury.
