The Sam Houston State softball team will be looking to get back on the winning track when the Bearkats play host to UTSA in a Southland Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Kats ended a six-game losing streak Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Monmouth University of New Jersey. Sam Houston won 6-1 and 2-1. The victories upped SHSU's 2010 record to 6-14.
But SHSU still is winless in Southland play, getting swept in their first two league series against Stephen F. Austin and Texas State.
The UTSA Roadrunners enter Saturday's contests with a 7-14 season record and stand 5-6 in Southland action.
The visitors from San Antonio are led by one of the top hitters in the league. Sophomore infielder Caitlyn Ivy is batting .450 for the year with five doubles and eight home runs to her credit.
Sam Houston will counter with sophomore outfielder Erin Burford who is hitting .368 and shortstop Hailey Wiginton who owns a .333 average.
Other top hitters for the Kats included Tori Benavidez (.333), Amy Brown (.327) and Tomi Garrison (.364).
The three-game series between Sam Houston and UTSA will conclude with a 1 p.m. single game Sunday afternoon.
