Softball completes sweep of UTSA with 4-3 win

HUNTSVILLE - Lauren Burns went 3-for-3 and provided the game-winning RBI with a walk with the bases loaded in the eighth innings as Sam Houston State rallied for a 4-3 victory over UTSA to sweep a Southland Conference softball series with the Roadrunners Sunday.

Morgan Mikulin (7-9) picked up her fifth pitching victory in five games this week as she threw the final three innings. The senior from Huntsville got both wins in a non-conference doubleheader against Monmouth University Wednesday and was the winning pitcher in all three victories over UTSA.

Sam Houston now has won five games in a row and stands 9-14 for the year and 3-6 in Southland action.

An RBI double by Callie Wood gave Sam Houston a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. UTSA tied the contest 1-1 as Ashley Kappler doubled down the line to score a run.

The Roadrunners appeared headed for a victory with two runs in the top of the eighth, but Sam Houston came back to score three in the bottom of the inning for the victory. Wood, who went 2-for-3 for the day, picked up her second RBI with a walk. Ashley Isbell singled to score another run and losing pitcher Danye Holmes walked in the winning run.

Sam Houston State will host a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday with North Dakota State.
