Baseball challenges No. 9 Rice Owls Tuesday
3/9/2010 8:45:00 AM | Baseball
The Bearkats and the Owls have battled each of the past two years in the first round of the NCAA Regional.
Rice (7-5) is beginning a six-game home stand. The Kat-Owl tilt is set for 6:30 pm at Reckling Park.
Sam Houston is 3-9 for the season with four of those losses coming at the hands of No. 11 TCU in the first series of the season.
At 7-5 Rice has the same record to start the season that it did in 2008. That 2008 Rice squad went on to win the Conference USA regular season championship and make it all the way to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. In the other recent years the Owls have had 8-4 records in both 2009 and 2007.
Ryan Mooney, Mark Hudson and Taylor Davis lead Sam Houston at the plate. Mooney, a returning starter from last year's NCAA regional squad, is hitting .367 with four doubles and one home run. Hudson and Davis, both newcomers, are hitting .367 and .340, respectively.
Following the Rice game Tuesday, Sam Houston will open Southland Conference action at UT-Arlington with a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Next home games for the Bearkats will be the Southland series with UTSA Friday through Sunday March 19-21.
