Box Score The Sam Houston State softball team was one out away from knocking off another top 25 ranked opponent at Texas A&M Wednesday, but the Aggies Rhiannon Kliesing blasted a three-run double to tie the game.
One inning later, in the bottom of the eighth, another RBI double by Kekei Orsak allowed the No. 21 ranked Aggies to escape with a 4-3 non-conference victory.
Senior Morgan Mikulin shut out Texas A&M for six innings before the Aggie rally in the bottom of the seventh. Mikulin (10-15) drew the loss but not before a strong performance that saw the right-hander spread nine hits over seven and a third innings. She struck out two Aggies.
Sam Houston (15-23), which earlier this year shut out No. 23 Baylor 4-0 in Huntsville, struck early. In the first inning, shortstop Hailey Wiginton singled, was sacrificed to second, reached third on a single by Tomi Garrison and scored on an A&M error.
Freshman Shelbi Tucker's two-run double in the third inning gave Sam Houston a 3-0 lead.
Texas A&M (33-11) ended the game with nine hits while Sam Houston totaled eight. Tucker went 3-for-4 and Mikulin was 2-for-3 to lead the Bearkats at the plate.
Sam Houston returns to Southland Conference action this weekend, hosting UT-Arlington in another critical league series. The Bearkats stand 7-11 in league action. Only the top six regular season finishers advance to the Southland Conference post-season tournament. Sam Houston currently is a game-and-a-half back of the sixth place team in the current standings.
