Baseball travels to Lamar for weekend series

Sam Houston travels to Beaumont to battle the Lamar Cardinals in a Southland Conference series that begins Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
The Bearkats enter the contest tied for sixth place in the 2010 Southland Conference race with UT-Arlington. Both the Kats and the Mavs own 8-7 league records. Sam Houston is 15-19 for the year after taking two of three from McNeese in Huntsville last weekend and falling 8-7 to Rice Tuesday night.
Lamar is in eighth place in the league standings with a 6-9 Southland mark and a 20-15 overall record. Only the top eight finishers in the final regular season standings earn berths in the Southland post-season tournament in Corpus Christi. Sam Houston has earned NCAA berths by winning the Southland tournament each of the past three years.
The series appears even on paper. Lamar and Sam Houston both own identical .296 team batting average. The Cardinals' pitching staff has produced a 4.76 team earned run average while the Bearkats have a 5.83 team ERA.
Aaron Buchanan, the league's sixth best hitter, leads Lamar at the plate with a .389 batting average.
Sam Houston designated hitter Chris Andreas stands 10th in Southland hitting with a .369 average.
The next home games for the Kats will be a Southland series with Nicholls Friday through Sunday April 23-25.
