For Sam Houston State to have the opportunity to become the first to accomplish that feat, the Bearkats must turn around their season this weekend.
Eight of the league's 11 teams qualify for the post-season event which will be held in Corpus Christi again in 2010.
Coming into this weekend's home series with Nicholls, the Bearkats are tied for eighth place with their opponent making each of the three contests with the Colonels doubly important.
Sam Houston has won the last three conference tournaments, earning NCAA regional berths with the victories.
The Kats and the Colonels both own 8-10 records in Southland action. Sam Houston stands 15-23 for the year while the Colonels are even at 18-18. The two battle at Don Sanders Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Sam Houston has been hot and cold in league play this year. The Bearkats swept its road series with UTSA and took two of three games from both McNeese State and UT-Arlington. But SHSU also has been swept twice by Lamar and Northwestern State.
The Bearkats rank seventh in the league in hitting with a .294 team average. Braeden Riley leads the Southland in total hits with 60 and Chris Andreas is the SLC's sixth leading hitter with a .374 average.
Nicholls stands 10th in the Southland with a .279 team batting average but their pitching ace Clint Dempster stands seventh in the league earned run standings with a 3.15 season ERA.
