Kats knock off Horns

The Sam Houston State baseball team pulled off a 3-2 win on Sunday in an exhibition game against the University of Texas at Disch-Falk Field in Austin. The teams played in a predetermined 10-inning game.
With the score tied at two in the top of the eighth, the Kats plated the game-winner. With one out, Greg Olson singled to second base and moved second on an errant throw. Shea Pierce walked and with two outs Jessie Plumlee singled to the gap in left centerfield to, plating Olson with the go-ahead run.
Michael Hilliard pitched an inning of relief for the Kats, picking up the win. The Kats sent seven pitchers to the hill, who combined to limit the Longhorns to just three hits and strikeout nine batters while walking five.
The Bearkats had 10 hits, with Olson leading with way with three hits. John Hale had a pair of hits, including the games only extra base hit, a homer in the fourth. Kevin Miller also added two hits for the Bearkats.
Texas drew first blood in the top of the third inning. Brooks Marlow led off the frame with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Collin Shaw and third on a wild pitch. Christian Summers sent him home with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Kats tied the game in the fourth inning when John Hale sent a 1-0 offering over the leftfield fence for a one-out solo home run.
The Bearkats took a 2-1 lead in the top seventh. Jordan Bunch drew a one-out walk. He moved to second on a single by Kevin Miller and advanced to third when the Horns were unable to complete the double play on a grounder by Luke Plucheck. Colt Atwood singled to centerfield to drive Bunch in for the go-ahead run.
Texas evened the score in the home half of the seventh. Marlow drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a balk and third on a groundout by Shaw. Summers was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Alex Silver put down a sacrifice squeeze bunt, but Marlow was hesitant on his move home and was retired at the plate. Hunter Redman was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Cohl Walla drew a walk to push the equalizer across.
Sam Houston will play one more exhibition game this fall, when they travel to Fort Worth on Saturday to take on TCU.
