Bowlers go 5-0 on tournament first day

The Sam Houston women's bowling team rolled undefeated through five matches in the program's first home tournament, ending the day in third place in total pins at the inaugural Track Kat Klash Bowling Invitational at Huntsville Lanes.
The Bearkats posted victories in Baker total pins action over Jackson State 752-638, Prairie View 836-652, Grambling State 821-689, Mississippi Valley State 814-565 and Alabama State 754-711.
The 5-0 mark Friday upped Sam Houston's season NCAA match won-loss record to 33-12.
The Bearkats stand in third place in total pins with 3,977. No. 6 ranked Arkansas State leads the tournament with 4,204 pints. No. 2 Vanderbilt is in second place with 4,080 pins.
"We had a successful first day and put ourselves in position to compete for the tournament championship on Sunday," head coach Brad Hagen said. "It's great to have the opportunity to play in our home facility at Huntsville Lanes. We're grateful to all the coaches and everyone locally who is making this event so special."
No. 5 Nebraska stands fourth in the team standings with 3864 pins, followed by Monmouth 3,773, No. 13 Stephen F. Austin 3,732, Long Island 3,670, Louisiana Tech 3,571, Alabama State 3,497, Prairie View A&M 3,486, Texas Southern 3,312, Jackson State 3,301, Grambling 3,078 and Mississippi Valley State.
The competition gets tougher Saturday in tradition team match play where Sam Houston will face Arkansas State, Vanderbilt, Stephen F. Austin, Monmouth and Long Island.
Total pins standings following Saturday's action will determine the standings for bracket Baker best-of-seven play on Sunday.
There is no admission charge for the Kat Klash Bowling Tournament. Action begins Saturday at 9 a.m.
