Britni Martin scored 18 points and three other Bearkats scored in double figures as the Sam Houston women handed Stephen F. Austin a 76-66 Southland Conference loss at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Wednesday night.
The victory clinched a winning season record for Sam Houston, now 16-13 for the year, the SHSU women's first above .500 record since 1996. The Bearkats stand 10-5 in Southland Conference action.
Sam Houston's Sequeena Thomas recorded her fifth consecutive game with both double figure points and rebounds as she scored 17 and pulled down 14 boards. Chanice Smith and Khamra Echols added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Stephen F. Austin (11-17, 8-7) was led by Tammara Marion with 18 points.
During the first half, the game was tied seven times with 12 lead changes before SFA took a 30-28 lead into the locker room at intermission.
The Lumberjacks built an early second half six-point lead, 39-33 with 17:52 to play. With the scored tied 47-47 a layup by Terrah Austin began a 9-0 Sam Houston run to build a 56-47 lead and the Kats never looked back.
Sam Houston, already assured of making its second consecutive State Farm Southland Conference tournament appearance in Katy next week, will end the regular season at Texas State in San Marcos Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
