Kats win at Hal Sutton

Landa Stewart and Jessica Borth tied for first place and all five Bearkats placed among the top seven individuals as the Sam Houston women's golf team earned its second tournament championship of the 2010-11 season, winning by a margin of 54 strokes.
The tournament was played on the par 72, 6,019-yard course at the Stonebridge Golf Club in Bossier City.
Stewart defeated Borth in a sudden death playoff for the individual medalist trophy. Both made their pars on the first hole of sudden death but Stewart parred and Borth boggied on the second hole.
Stewart's 54-hole totaled was 74-75-75--897. Borth fired the low round of the tournament, a three-under 69, on Tuesday to earn the tie for first place, posting a score of 78-77-69--897.
The individual medalist championship was the second for Stewart this year. Both Stewart and the team took home trophies at the Sam Houston Fall Invitational at Elkins Lake last fall.
Sam Houston's Meghann Stevens and Shelby Hardy tied for third place. Stevens fired 74-79-72--225 while Hardy posted a 80-73-72--225. Meghann Musk was seventh with an 83-78-75--236 total.
Sam Houston's winning team score was 306-303-288--897. Stephen F. Austin was the runner-up with a 951. Centenary placed third with 1,000 followed by Tyler Junior College 1,003, Texarkana Community College 1,015 and Christian Brothers University 1,193.
"This was a great confidence builder for the team with the Southland Conference tournament coming up in three weeks in Corpus Christi," Sam Houston women's golf coach Tommy Chain said. "I'm really proud of the girls."
Next action for the Bearkat women will be the Houston Baptist Huskie Invitational April 4 and 5.
