Sam Houston State junior Shelby Hardy has been named Southland Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for the month of April. Hardy joins UTSA sophomore Paola Valerio as the only two-time player of the month winners this season.
A native of San Saba, Texas Hardy won the individual medalist championship at the Houston Baptist Husky Classic, firing a four-over total of 73-72-75--220. She earned the trophy with a seven-stroke margin of victory. Hardy and teammate senior Landa Stewart have three of the five wins by Southland Conference golfers this season, the most among conference teams.
Hardy in 2009-10 was the SHSU Women's Golf MVP. She was voted All-Southland Conference in 2010 after posting a 77.25 stroke average last year. She also was the runner-up in the 2010 Southland Conference Golf Tournament.
In 10 events in 2010-11, Hardy has posted a stroke average of 75.21. She is on pace to break the all-time SHSU single season stroke average record of 75.40 accomplished in 2006-2007 by Stephanie Page. In the 10 events Hardy has competed in thus far she has one victory, four other top-5 finishes, and has finished in the top-20 nine times.
Hardy and her teammates will be back in action April 18-20, when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to participate in the 2011 Southland Conference Golf Tournament.
