A series sweep last week over Lamar moved the Bearkats into third place in the 2011 Southland standings. SHSU stands 11-7 in Southland play and 26-13 for the year.
Stephen F. Austin and Texas State are tied for first place, both with 13-5 league marks.
Sam Houston's games with the Colonels in Thibodaux are scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. Nicholls brings a 7-11 Southland and 18-19 season record into the contest. The Colonels are tied for 10th place with A&M-Corpus Christi.
Texas State takes on last place Northwestern State (4-14) in Thibodaux and SFA will take on Central Arkansas (8-10) in Conway.
Two Sam Houston players come into this week's Southland series looking for milestones.
Senior shortstop Braeden Riley is three hits away from becoming Sam Houston's all-time leader in career hits. Riley's total in 188 games as a Bearkat is 269 hit. Terry Pirtle set the current career mark of 271 total hits playing from 1984 to 1987.
Another senior, second baseman Ryan Mooney, is two hits shy of becoming 10th Sam Houston baseball player to total 200 career hits. Mooney has totaled 198 hits in 158 games in his four years as a Bearkat.
Mooney stands as one of four Sam Houston starters with batting averages over .300. Designated hitter Chris Andreas leads the team and ranks eighth in the Southland Conference with a .368 mean that includes 15 doubles, two triples and seven home runs.
Mooney is the team's second-leading hitter with a .352 average. Also above .300 are outfielders Mark Hudson (.333) and Greg Olson (.310).
Following the Nicholls series, Sam Houston will face a non-conference encounter with Texas A&M in College Station Tuesday, April 26. The Bearkats will host Southeastern Louisiana in their next Southland home series beginning Friday, April 29.
