
All-Southland Conference Bearkats

Five Sam Houston State University baseball players have been named to the 2011 All-Southland Conference baseball team.
Right-handed pitcher Matt Shelton and designated hitter Chris Andreas earned first team honors. Second baseman Ryan Mooney was a second team selection. Shortstop Braeden Riley and right-handed pitcher Brandon Kimbrel received honorable mention honors.
Riley earns All-Southland recognition for the third time in his Bearkat career while Andreas has received all-league honors the past two years.
Andreas was the Bearkats second-leading hitter this season with a .324 average for the season. The senior from Brenham led Sam Houston in runs batted in (52), total bases (123) slugging percentage (.577) and home runs (11). A first-team all-Southland selection both as a junior and senior, Andreas owns a .350 career batting average as a Sam Houston State player.
Shelton started 14 games on the mound for the Bearkats in 2011, rolling up a 7-2 won-loss record and a 2.96 earned run average. He led the team in strike outs with 82. The "Most Valuable Player" at the 2009 Southland post-season tournament, senior from Mansfield has compiled a 20-10 career record as a four-year starter for the Bearkats.
Mooney led Sam Houston in hitting this season with a .338 batting average. The senior from The Woodlands produced 24 multiple hit games and led the team in total hits as well with 79. Mooney is one of only 10 players in the history of Sam Houston baseball to total more than 200 hits. His career total going into the Southland tournament this week is 208.
Riley has been a four-year starter for the Bearkats, becoming the all-time total hits leader (288) for Sam Houston. This season, the senior from Woodville produced 19 multiple hit games and posted a .282 batting average.
Brandon Kimbrel rolled up a 6-4 record in 14 starts for the Bearkats this season. A senior from Cameron, he posted a 3.51 earned run average and totaled 69 strike outs.
Sam Houston will be the number five seeded team in the 2011 Southland Conference tournament. The Bearkats will face No. 4 seed Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the first round of the tournament at San Marcos.
