Sam Houston
head baseball coach David Pierce and his staff have announced a group of five
signings for the 2014 season.
The Bearkats signed two high school pitchers, a two-way high school player, a
junior college catcher and pitcher.
"With a very good class of juniors and sophomores returning, this class completes
our needs for the 2014 season," Pierce said. "We feel we have improved the
depth of our middle infield play, behind the plate and definitely on the mound."
"Our recruiting coordinator Sean Allen and assistant coach Philip Miller have
put together a class that exemplifies character and talent. Although this class
is small in numbers, it potentially has a chance to be an outstanding class."
The Bearkat baseball signees are:
Dylan Ebbs - OF/RHP - Santa Fe
Galveston County Most Valuable Player ... District MVP ... Second-team All-State performer ... Hit .455 with 35 RBI's ... 11-2 with a 1.27 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 82 innings
Coach Pierce - "Dylan is a true two-way player. He has the potential to hit and pitch for us early in his career. He has shown the ability to hit with power and for average from the left side and is a very polished RHP."
Coach Allen - "Dylan is the true meaning of a Baseball Player. He finds ways to help his team win games. If he is on the mound or at home plate he wants to be in the pressure situation. He has some very plus hitting tools, really finds the barrel consistently and is a very strong kid which will allow him to hit for power. On the mound he just pounds the strike zone, has a plus change up and really competes."
Paco Pena - RHP - Klein Collins
Competed in the Perfect Game National Showcase ... Ranked the 18th best pitcher in the state of Texas by Perfect Game ... Ranked 448th in the country by perfect game
Coach Pierce - "Paco has a great pitcher's body and will only get stronger. He has been recognized by many as one of the top pitchers in the state." This kid has a chance to be a frontline pitcher early in his college career. "
Coach Allen - "The thing I like the most about Paco is ability to sink the ball. He usually pitches 85-88 touching 90, but he does it with plus sink to his fast ball. He has deception in his delivery and he creates some ugly swings by hitters. He has a very bright future here at SHSU".
Sam Odom - RHP - Klein
6-2 with a 2.5 ERA and two saves in 48 innings ... 49 strikeouts to nine walks ...
Coach Pierce - "May be the best sleeper in this class. He has great feel for all his pitches. He has to be tough; he played middle linebacker for a very good 5A football program."
Coach Allen - Sam is a true competitor. He pitches like he plays football, very aggressive and doesn't back down from anybody or anything. He throws a ton of strikes with good stuff. "
Caleb Williams - C - Montgomery / McLennan Junior College
Played in Texas Junior College All-Star Game ... hit .315 with seven doubles and three homeruns as a freshman for McLennan ... three-time all-district first-team selection for Montgomery High School ... hit .414 with 11 homeruns and 33 RBIs at Montgomery ...
Coach Pierce - "Caleb may give us another dimension as an offensive catcher for 2014. He is big and physical with very good tools."
Coach Allen - "Caleb is a very physical catcher. Throws well and has power. He has a flat swing and doesn't swing and
miss a bunch. He will help provide some
power and provide us with another middle of the order type of hitter."
Nolan Riggs - RHP - Klein Collins / San Jacinto
Junior College
Had a 1.06 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 17 innings at San Jac ... was ranked 15th best high school pitcher in the State of Texas by Perfect Game
Coach Pierce - "As stated, one of the best pitchers in the state of Texas out
of high school. Pitched very well in the
Texas Collegiate League this past summer and has had continued success this
fall at San Jac. Nolan can create angles
and power with his 6'8" frame. I am looking forward to working with this young man."
Coach Allen - "Riggs has front in of the rotation type of stuff. We expect him to walk in and be a weekend
type arm for us. Everybody that you talk
to about Riggs says he is headed in the right direction and gets better every
time he threw this fall. He pitches in
the 88-92 range with good downhill life, I think his best pitching days are
still ahead of him, which makes it really exciting for our program to have
Nolan join us next year."
