
Bearkats 7th at Mid-Winter Invitational

Sam Houston's No. 4 ranked women's bowling team finished seventh in the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark., this weekend.
A pair of victories over nationally ranked Valparaiso Sunday gave the Bearkats a 6-7 record at the tournament. The results in the first tournament of the spring semester schedule lifts Sam Houston's over season dual match record to 52-18.
Sam Houston went 3-2 in baker match team play Friday and 1-4 in traditional team matches Saturday. The Bearkats' two-day pin total was 9,289.
Sunday in bracket play, Sam Houston defeated Valparaiso 4-1 in their first best-of-seven baker team match, then lost to Stephen F. Austin 4-1 before downing Valparaiso 4-2 to claim seventh place.
Nebraska won the team championship. Central Missouri was the runner-up followed by Arkansas State in third place, Vanderbilt, Stephen F. Austin and Wisconsin-Whitewater in sixth.
The Bearkats started strong Friday, defeatingLouisiana Tech 995-887, No. 15 Valparaiso 869-816 and the host team No. 7 Arkansas State 943-850.
The Kats stumbled against No. 3 Vanderbilt, falling 958-811 and lost to unranked Prairie View A&M 1,012-921.
Saturday, SHSU opened with a 1,045-883 victory over Alabama A&M, then fell in succession to Wisconsin-Whitewater 1,034-966, Nebraska 1,047-96, Elmhurst 887-803 and Stephen F. Austin 1,033-904.
Anna Groce and Kimi Davidson led the Bearkats in team play Saturday with individual totals of 1,001 and 994, respectively in five matches each.
Sam Houston entered the tournament with its highest national ranking in the two-and-a-half year history of the program.
The No. 4 ranked Bearkats are one of 16 teams participating in the event being held at the Jonesboro Bowling Center in Jonesboro, Ark. Nine of the teams in the field are nationally ranked.
