
Hornet Invitational Tournament Champions

The No. 6 ranked Sam Houston women's bowling team picked up its first regular season tournament championship of the 2013-14 schedule Sunday by winning the Hornet Invitational in Montgomery, Ala.
The Bearkats won two of their three best-of-seven baker matches in bracket play Sunday to hoist the trophy. The event was held at the Brunswick Zone Lanes.
Sam Houston finished the tournament with an 11-1 dual match mark. The performance lifts the Kats' season mark to 37-14 for the year.
The Bearkats went 5-0 in traditional team play on Saturday and 4-0 in quad baker action on Friday. The event is being held at the Brunswick Zone Lanes.
Anna Groce finished traditional team action Saturday with the top average in the tournament, totaling 1,066 pins for a 213.2 mean. Kimi Davidson placed fourth in the event with a 207.1 average. Both Groce and Davidson were named to the all-tournament team.
Sam Houston began bracket play Sunday with and contest against Alabama State after earning the number one seed with 8,503 pins during the first two days play.
Saturday in traditional team play, the Kats defeated Southern 954-793, Grambling 857-689, Louisiana 987-904, Tulane 1055-793 and Alabama State 938-922.
Friday, in quad baker action, Sam Houston downed Jackson State 818-734, Florida A&M 767-684, Texas Southern 701-674 and Alabama A&M 721-684.
“This tournament has been a much needed confidence builder for us,” head coach Brad Hagen said. “The lanes played tough sometimes but we played tough all weekend.”
