Huntsville -- Deveney Wells-Gibson totaled 21 kills and Haley Neisler added 16 to lead Sam Houston to a 25-19 25-19 19-25 25-17 Southland Conference volleyball victory over Nicholls State Saturday afternoon.
The match was the final regular season home contest for the Bearkats and the last appearance at Johnson Coliseum for Bearkat seniors Tayler Gray, Haley Neisler and Lauren Bohlen.
“These three seniors have been an amazing group to work with,” head coach Brenda Gray said. “There's still a lot of volleyball to be played and we're looking forward to seeing what happens.”
Neisler totaled 16 kills and had a hand in five of Sam Houston's 11 blocks.
Gray assisted on 51 of Sam Houston's 61 kills and totaled nine digs.
Bohlen was credited with two kills and had three block assists.
The victory ups Sam Houston's record to 16-9. The Bearkats stand in third place in the Southland race with a 12-3 league mark. The Kats play their final two regular season matches on the road.
Nicholls drops to 5-21 for the year and 2-14 in Southland play.
The Colonels battled hard. Each set saw multiple ties and lead changes. All together there were 29 ties and 12 lead changes for the day.
Nicholls was led by Kayla Mashburn with 20 kills.
Bohlen, Gray and Neisler have been part of four Bearkat teams that have rolled up 70 victories during the past four years, the most wins by any group of seniors since 1997. The three seniors each played important roles on last year's Southland Conference championship squad, the program's first title in more than a decade.
They have been members of SHSU squads that have qualified for the league's post-season tournament each of their four years.
