Britni Martin scored 23 points and dished out six assists to lead the Bearkat women's basketball team to a 64-50 victory over rival Stephen F. Austin, ending a three-game losing streak.
Sam Houston (15-11, 10-4 SLC) trailed for the first minute and a half of the game before Sequeena Thomas hit a pair of free throws to tie the game 2-2. The Kats never trailed again.
With three minutes left in the first half SFA (11-15, 6-9 SLC) pulled within four points, at 22-18. But the Kats finished the half on an 8-0 run to take a 30-18 lead at the break.
"We are so excited to be back at home and to get this win, especially over Stephen F. Austin," Coach Brenda Nicholls said. "I thought we played extremely well together and we shot the ball pretty well."
Senior Chanice Smith was honored before the game in an early senior day ceremony. Smith then scored 14 points and picked up five boards. She was two-of-four from three-point range.
Sequeena Thomas scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Jazmin Wiley chipped in seven points.
"This win is going to give us that momentum we need," said Nicholls. "We've got two more games at home and we're going to take one at a time."
SFA got within six points at 40-34 with 10:33 left to play. The Kats outscored SFA 13-5 over the next three minutes and the Lumberjacks never got back within 10 points.
Stephen F. Austin had three players score in double figures. Porsha Roberts led the team with 12 points and ten rebounds. Daylyn Harris added 11 points and Annette Davis chipped in 10.
The Kats will have a weekend off before hosting Nicholls State next Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
