With two weeks to go before the two teams' 2013 season openers, both the Sam Houston baseball and softball squads had a day of fun with their fans and alumni Saturday on the university campus.
An outstanding turnout of former players attended and participated in the baseball alumni game at Don Sanders Stadium. The softball team also had a successful "Home Run Derby" fundraiser at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The day concluded with the annual SHSU Baseball Auction and Dinner at the Lowman Student Center.
A special feature of the day's events was the recognition of the 1963 baseball team on the 50th anniversary of the squad's NAIA National Championship performance. Twelve members of the team were recognized both at the alumni baseball game and the banquet.
"The alumni game was a great event and everyone had a good time," SHSU head coach David Pierce said.
Bearkat softball coach also was pleased with the turnout for the "Home Run Derby."
"It was a perfect afternoon and a great event," Brock said. "Both the team members and the participants had a great time."
Baseball will open its schedule with a tournament in San Marcos Friday, February 15 through Sunday February 17. The Kats will face Tulane, Missouri State and Texas State in the event.
The 2013 home opener for Sam Houston baseball at Don Sanders Stadium is Tuesday, Feb. 19 versus the University of Houston at 6:30 p.m.
