Led by Gia Ayers and Careen Baylor who both scored 17 points, Lamar ended Sam Houston State's six-game winning streak with a 52-48 Southland Conference women's basketball victory over the Bearkats at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Lamar took command early, building a nine-point lead at the mid-point of the first half and going up by as many as 12 points with four minutes to play.
Sequeena Thomas led Sam Houston with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Britni Martin scored 15.
Lamar's defense limited Sam Houston to 33 percent shooting as the Bearkats went 20-of-60 from the floor and 3-of-23 from beyond the arc.
Thomas led the Bearkats with 12 rebounds. Both teams pulled down 45 boards.
Lamar went 18-for-59 from the field for 30.5 per cent shooting.
Sam Houston still holds on to first place in the Southland Conference with a 9-2 league mark. The Kats dropped to 13-10 for the year. The Cardinals are a half game behind in second with a 16-6 season and 9-3 conference record.
