Action begins with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, the pair are scheduled for a 12 noon single game.
Sam Houston, the runner-up in both the Southland Conference regular season and post-season tournament last year, is the pick of the league head coaches to win the championship in 2013.
The Bearkats are 9-12 in pre-conference play. Sam Houston's victories include wins over Texas Tech, Baylor, Illinois State and two former Southland foes Texas-San Antonio and Texas State.
Shortstop Cecilia Castillo, center fielder Tori Benavidez and designated player Hillary Adams are the Kats' top offensive threats. Castillo is hitting .364 with four home runs and 14 RBIs. Benavidez sports a .330 batting average. Adams owns a .317 hitting mean with seven home runs and 22 RBIs.
Shelby Lancaster, Haley Baros and Meme Quinn have carried the load in the pitching circle. Lancaster owns a 6-3 won-loss record with a 2.95 season earned run average.
Although tabbed to finish eighth in the coaches' preseason poll, Southeastern Louisiana has shown they will be a team to watch in the 2013 race. The Lions are 10-5 thus far in the season.
Amber Sather (.353) and Kelsey Nichols (.341) are the top hitters for Southeastern Louisiana.
Following the road trip to Louisiana, the Sam Houston softball team will play host to the Purdue Boilermakers Tuesday, March 12, in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The Bearkats also will host Central Arkansas in a Southland Conference series Saturday and Sunday, March 16-17.
