Shelby Hardy carded a four-under, 68 in the first round of the Southland Conference Women's Golf Championships at the Frisco Lakes Golf Club in Frisco, Texas.
Hardy's 68 ties the Bearkat record for low round at the conference tournament. Kirsten Spittler shot a 68 at Raven Nest when the Kats hosted in 2010. Spittler was three under on the par-71 course while Hardy shot the first postseason four under for SHSU.
The senior sits in first after day one of the event. She finished second as a freshman in 2010.
"Shelby kept the ball in play all day today and really managed her game well in the wind," said coach Brandt Kieschnick. "The Bearkats are right there in the hunt after the first round and look forward to tomorrow."
Sam Houston is tied for third after an 18-hole total of 299. The Bearkats are just seven shots back of the leaders, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 292. Central Arkansas is in second at 293. The Kats are tied with Oral Roberts and Lamar.
The Bearkat's 299 ties the school record for third lowest round at the league championships. The 2010 team set the record with a round of 285 at Raven Nest.
A&M-Corpus Christi was led by sophomore Vanessa Johnson, who shot a 3-under par 69, which was the second-lowest round of the day
Central Arkansas had two players play par golf to put the Bears in second place with a 5-over par 293. Junior Carly Dear and sophomore Calin Senneryd each carded a 72 while senior Julia Roth shot a 2-over 74 and freshman Sarah Brown had a 3-over 75 to put the Bears only one shot behind the Islanders.
Only 17 strokes separate first and seventh place in the tournament. McNeese State (302) is sixth while Stephen F. Austin (309) is seventh.
Play resumes Tuesday with teams teeing off at 8 a.m. The final pairings will include Oral Roberts, Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi with tee times set between 9:20 a.m. and 9:52 a.m.
Nicole Budnik and Jenna Stene are tied for 18th after shooting a 76. Jessica Borth is 29th (79) and Meghan Musk is 33rd (82).
