Janine Kuwahara of Davao City in Mindanao, Philippines, is the newest member of Sam Houston's nationally-ranked women's bowling program.
Kuwahara is the third international player and the fourth youth national team member to join the Bearkat program during its three-year history.
Last February she won her first silver medal in the singles division representing the Philippines youth national team at the Asian Youth Championships in Egypt. Additionally she participated for her country last summer as Thailand played host to the 12th annual World Youth Bowling Championships.
“Janine possesses a lot of key qualities you look for in recruiting quality young players,” SHSU bowling head coach Brad Hagen said. “Her international competitive maturity, humbleness, and work ethic are going to pay great dividends for her as well as this programs future success.”
Other national team members who have joined the Bearkats include Dayna Galganski (Junior Team USA 2009), Aida Sanchez (Dominican Republic youth national and adult team) and Neishka Cardona (Puerto Rico youth national and adult team).
Sam Houston State's women's bowling team has ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division I women's bowling throughout its three-year history. The Bearkats earned berths in the NCAA Division I Championships Elite Eight in both 2011 and 2013.
