Women Finish Third at Southland Outdoor

Paced by gold medals by Adriene Quillin, Shelbie Zotyka and the women's 4x400 relay, the Sam Houston women's team finished third in the 2013 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Sunday in Lake Charles, La.
Stephen F. Austin (scored 171 points, while McNeese State, the host of this year's championships meet, finished second with 134 points. Sam Houston State was third (100 points), followed by Northwestern State (92.5), Central Arkansas (80), Southeastern Louisiana (60.5), Oral Roberts (55.5), Nicholls State (50), Lamar (49.5) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 26.
Sam Houston won the women's 4x400-meter relay to lock up third place in the team standings. The team of junior Simbe George, freshman Jordan Grady, freshman Ruth Amaku and Lygia Foreman combined to run 3:41.40 for the win. SFA was second (3:44.45) and Northwestern State was third (3:45.36).
Sam Houston got 10 points from senior Shelbie Zotyka, who won the women's pole vault at a height of 12-10.75. Sophomore teammate, Kara Whitson, was one of three competitors to tie for fifth at a height of 11-10.75 to give the Bearkats 12.5 points.
Quillin won the hammer Friday with a throw of 181' 5”. Zotyka vaulted 12' 10.75”.
Amaku also was the runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles (1:00.91). Winnie Ileso placed third in the 100 meter hurdles (14.08) and Foreman was third in the 400 meter dash (55.44)
The top three finishers in each event earn All-Southland Conference accolades with the winner earning first-team honors, the runner up earning second-team honors and the third-place finishing earning third-team honors. The remainder of the postseason awards will be announced next week.
