Record-Breaking Season For Kats in 2013

The 2013 season proved to be another record-breaking year for the Bearkat softball team.
From victories to hitting, defense and pitching, Sam Houston set all kinds of records both as a team and individually. The 37-24 overall record in 2013 for the squad ranks as the program's sixth highest single season victory total in its 33-year history.
Sam Houston set team single season records for highest batting average (.321), most runs scored (320), most total hits (559), most home runs (59) and most RBIs (290).
Individually, senior center fielder Tori Benavidez produced the second highest single season batting average with a mark of .406. Only April Bardwell ranks higher with a .415 batting average in 2005.
Freshman shortstop Tiffany Castillo's .380 batting average in 2013 ranks as the eighth best all-time by a Bearkat. Junior second baseman Alyssa Coggins' .354 hitting mean stands 17th in the rankings.
Benavidez also set season records for most at bats (202) and hits (82) and produced the second best single season total of runs scored (51).
Sophomore designated player Hillary Adams set single season marks for most RBIs (60) and most home runs (13).
Senior first baseman Kim Damian's 42 RBIs rank third all-time and Tiffany Castillos' 40 RBIs stand fourth in the record book. Damian also tied her own record with 11 home runs to rank number two all-time in the single season rankings.
Defensively, Coggins' 146 assists stands as Sam Houston's fourth highest season total. Damian's .992 fielding average ties as the second best in one season for the Bearkats.
Bearkats etched their names into the career records as well.
Third baseman Shelbi Tucker's 207 appearances as a Bearkat ranks her fourth all-time in games played. She also ranks second all-time in career assists defensively with 479.
Five players from this year's squad now rank among the top 25 all-time hitters at Sam Houston.
Benavidez stands second behind only Lauren Boone (.366 in 2003-06) with her career mark of .358. Damian (.313) completes her career ranked No. 12. Also in the top 25 are Jessica Slater (No. 7, 332), Adams (No. 13, .313), Coggins (No. 23, .289) and Cecilia Castillo (No. 25, .284).
Damian stands as Sam Houston's career home run hitter (27) and ranks No. 2 all-time in RBIs (107). Adams ranks second all-time in home runs (22) and Tucker third (21).
