Nine Bearkats Named 50th Anniversary All-SLC

Nine Sam Houston student-athletes have been named to the Southland Conference 50th Anniversary all-time softball roster.
The nine Bearkats are April Bardwell, Tori Benavidez, Jennifer Delcambre, Shonta Garr, Tami Hoover, Jennifer Jimenez, Julie Thomas, Shelbi Tucker and Hailey Wiginton.
The Southland developed a metric that measured real-time honors throughout the league's softball history that dates back to 1983. A premium was placed on first-team all-conference selections, individual honors, season and career statistics, and postseason success.
Bardwell, second baseman for the 2001 through 2004 Bearkat teams, was a two-time All-Southland first team selection. She ranks fifth in all-time SHSU hitting with a .344 average and her .415 batting mean as a senior is the program's single season best.
Benavidez earned 2013 Southland “Player of the Year” and “Hitter of the Year” honors with a .402 batting average, the second highest in Kat history. The center fielder earned first team All-Southland honors both in 2012 and 2013 after leading the Kats to consecutive post-season tournament finals appearances.
Delcambre ranks as Sam Houston's all-time “winningest” pitcher with 76 victories in the circle from 1992 to 1995. She was the Southland's “Player of the Year” after leading the Kats to the 1993 league title.
Garr earned first team all-conference honors , was 1989 Southland “Hitter of the Year.” The outfielder led the league in hits, triples and stolen bases.
Hoover, Sam Houston's all-time leader in stolen bases (109) earned first team all-conference honors in 1990 and 1991. The second baseman led the Southland in steals both years and helped lead Sam Houston to the Southland championship in 1990.
Jimenez was a first team all-Southland shortstop and the league's hitter of the year. The shortstop led Sam Houston to the 1993 Southland championship and the National Invitational Tournament title.
Thomas was Southland batting champion with a .363 average and earned first team all-league and “Hitter of the Year” honors in 1988. The second baseman led the Kats to both the 1988 Southland regular season and tournament championships.
Tucker garnered first team All-Southland honors at third base in both 2012 and 2013. She ranks second all-time at Sam Houston in assists (478) and led the Kats to consecutive Southland post-season finals appearances.
Wiginton was an All-Southland outfielder as a freshman in 2008 then earned all-league honors the next three years at shortstop. She led the Southland in batting average, runs scored and triples in 2009 and was an All-Southland tournament selection as well.
