Sam Houston's Imke Jagau, senior women's tennis player from Windhoek, Namibia, is representing her country this week at the 27th Summer World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
Athletes from 170 countries are in Kazan to vie for 351 sets of medals in 27 sports.
The international competition features student athletes aged 17-28 and is second only to the Olympic Games in terms of number of participating athletes and countries represented. FISU (International Federation of University Sport) is the international governing body of the Universiades.
Jagau is making her second appearance in the World University Games. In 2011, in Shenzhen, China, she reached the consolation singles finals.
She opened her 2013 competition this week with a walk-over victory against Hasifah Nanyingi of Uganda.
Belarusian Ilona Kremen, who holds an international ranking of 217, defeated Jagau 6-1 6-0 in the second round.
Jagau and her partner Henrieka Honiball will pair against Daneika Borthwick and Amanda Elwoty of Great Britain when doubles competition begins Wednesday.
