Deveney Wells-Gibson totaled 20 kills in 47 attempts to lead Sam Houston to a three-set victory over Houston Baptist Saturday at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The victory extended Sam Houston's 2013 Southland Conference record to a perfect 5-0 and represents the Bearkats' eighth win in their last 10 matches.
Sam Houston stands 8-6 for the year. Houston Baptist dropped to 5-10 for the season and 0-3 in Southland play.
"The team is very composed," SHSU head coach Brenda Gray said. "They don't get rattled at all. It definitely helps because you can't get too hyped up."
Carling Urben and Haley Neisler both totaled seven kills for the Kats. Shelby Genung had five and Krista Koopman and Lauren Bohlen each added four kills.
Tayler Gray assisted on 44 of Sam Houston's 48 kills and totaled 12 digs. Brenna Homer led the Kat defense with 22 digs.
Madeline Gaffney led Houston Baptist with 19 kills. The Huskies made a run at SHSU in the second set, scoring five of the first seven points. Sam Houston rebounded and took control late in the frame to stay in control.
"Defense is always first before offense for us," Neisler said. "When we were down in the second set, we had to keep our minds right and just keep at it."
Each of Sam Houston's five conference victories have come in straight sets.
