Women open with wins at SFA event

The Sam Houston women's tennis team opened its 2013 fall tournament schedule Saturday and Sunday, competing in the rain-shortened Stephen F. Austin Invitational in Nacogdoches.
In the A division singles senior Kayla Stevenson defeated Pachel Pierce of SFA 6-0 6-1 before falling to the Lumberjacks Gina Gordo 7-5 6-4. Karen Martinez defeated SFA's Lera Teryentieva 7-6 6-0. Sophomore Maddie Mortimore went to the super tie-brearker for a win over Ekaterina Tugarinova of Texas-Arlington 6-0 1-6 1-0 (10-8).
In the B division singles, senior Imke Jagau picked up three victories with a 6-0 6-2 win over Macarena Acosta of SFA 6-0 6-2, Kate Bugayenko of SFA 6-4 6-1 and a default.
Freshman Bella Costa split in her matches, falling to Sophie Rufyikiri of Louisiana-Monroe 6-0 6-0 then winning over Pierce 6-3 1-6 1-0 (11-9).
Senior Natalie Petaia lost to Lorca 6-4 6-3 and Teryentieva 6-2 6-2.
“We had some good wins but, with the weather, did not get to play as much as we'd have liked,” SHSU head coach Jim Giachino said. “It was exciting to see our two newcomers to the team pick up their first wins for Sam Houston.”
