Five Bearkats Named Preseason All-League

Five Sam Houston players have been named to the 2014 preseason All-Southland Conference softball squad.
Second baseman Alyssa Coggins and designated player Hillary Adams are first team selections on the preseason squad selected by vote of the league's head coaches.
Outfielder Jessica Slater and pitchers Haley Baros and Shelby Lancaster are second team honorees.
Sam Houston begins softball season by hosting Texas A&M on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Southland Conference action begins Saturday, Feb. 8, when the Kats play host to defending league regular season champion McNeese State.
Coggins, a senior from Sealy, is a three-year starter at second base who hit .353 last year. She has appeared in 165 games as a Bearkat and holds a .289 career batting average.
Adams, a junior from Elgin, hit .339 with five doubles and 13 home runs last season. She has earned All-Southland honors both of her years at SHSU.
Slater, a junior from Katy, hit .328 last season and boasts a .332 career batting average in her two seasons at Sam Houston. A speedy base-runner, Slater scored 31 runs last year.
Baros rolled up an 11-8 record in the circle last season, totaling 66 strike outs. The junior from Bay City went 5-1 in Southland action and picked up two big wins in the post-season tournament
Lancaster also produced an 11-8 mark in the circle last year. The senior from Tomball has rolled up 26 victories in 289 innings during her three-year career as a Bearkat.
