SHSU Women Blank NTCC Lions In Opener

The Sam Houston State women's tennis team started its 2014 dual match season with a 7-0 blanking of North Central Texas College Friday afternoon at the McAdams Tennis Center.
Returning veterans Olivia Battye and Maddie Mortimore won at the one and two singles in their first outings at the top of the lineup
Battye red-shirted last spring after playing her sophomore season in 2012 at the number five and six spots. Mortimore earned All-Southland honors at number five singles as a true freshman in 2013.
Seniors Kayla Stevenson and Natalie Petaia also won in straight sets at three and four, respectively. Newcomers transfer Karen Martinez and freshman Bella Costa were victors at five and six positions.
Battye and Petaia teamed to win the number one doubles, Mortimore and Stevenson won at the two position and the newcomers Costa and Martinez took the number three doubles.
Sam Houston returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Bearkats play host to McMurry.
