Bearkat Advances To Regional Round of 16

Fabienne Gettwart of Dreiech, Hessen, Germany made Sam Houston women's tennis history in Waco Friday.
The freshman became the first Bearkat to advance to the round of 16 at the annual USTA / ITA Regional Championships.
The regional event brings together the top 128 NCAA Division I intercollegiate players in Texas each fall. Gettwart won her opening three matches during the first two days of the event.
Friday the freshman defeated Nada Marjanovic of Abilene Christian 6-4 4-6 6-2 in her opening round and knocked off Alexis Thomas of North Texas 6-4 4-6 6-4 in the second round.
Dasha Sharapova of SMU, who upset No. 2 seed Saska Gavrilovska of Texas A&M in the second round, was Gettwart's next victory Friday afternoon. Gettwart won 6-4 6-2.
Irina Sotnikova, Sam Houston women's tennis “Most Valuable Player” four years in a row from 2006 to 2009, previously claimed the Bearkats' farthest advance in regional singles. She reached the round of 32 before losing in 2007.
Gettwart's run ended Saturday with a 6-1 6-3 loss in the round of 16 to No. 13 seed Despoina Vogasari of the University of Houston.
Another Bearkat freshman, Mila Milanovic, also posted a first round victory at the regional meet being hosted by Baylor. She defeated Eva Dench of Texas State 3-6 6-0 6-1.
Sam Houston's Maddie Mortimore and Karen Martinez both lost to seeded players in the first round Thursday. Bailey VanDyke and Caitlyn Mitchell also lost. All four will now play in the consolation draw.
