The Sam Houston men's and women's track and field teams spent their Friday at the Houston Tune Up, compiling 11 first-place finishes.
The highlight of the meet for the Kats was senior Sabrina Starr's second consecutive record-setting week in the 60m dash. In the preliminaries, Starr broke her school-record with a mark of 8.26 and followed up the feat with a mark of 8.30 in the finals.
Also notably, sophomore Daniel Demas would capture a personal-best of 8.64 in the race, good enough for third place.
The men's triple jump featured the Bearkats taking the top three spots and three personal-bests. Chris Theriot captured a first-place finish of 47' 9.25” followed by Chris Jefferson's 46' 10.25” (second-place) and Alejandro Trevino's 45' 3.25” in third.
In the men's weight throw, the trio of Brek Christensen, Trevor Sealy and Ammaad McCarthy captured the top three spots including Christensen's collegiate-best of 63' 11.5.” Sealy's toss of 59' 4.25 allowed him to take second followed by McCarthy's career-best of 57' .75” in third.
The women captured two top three finishes in the event via Adrienne Quillin's career-best and first place finish of 57' 4.25” and Ashley Jenkins' third place distance of 55' .25.”
In the high jump, personal bests included sophomore Joey Babbs' mark of 6' 4.75” (fifth place) for the men and 5' 5” for Nicole Jenrette (third place).
In the women's pole vault, Katelyn Wynn and Kara Whitson took the top two spots both via personal-bests of 12' 11.5” and 12' 5.5” respectively. Not to be outdone, on the men's side, freshman Garrett Larson recorded a collegiate-best of 16' .75” in a fourth place finish.
Another freshman best came by way of Kalvin Singletary's 49' 7.25” toss and fifth place finish in the shot put. On the women's side, sophomore Ashley Jenkins would score a personal-best of 42' 11.75” in a fourth place finish.
The career-bests would continue in the women's triple jump for junior Kaylynne Wright whose leap of 39' 5.25” was good enough for a third place finish.
Junior Lygia Foreman continued her tremendous season in a second-place finish and time of 24.99 in the 200m dash as did junior Rodney Jones who captured a third-place in the same race.
In the 400m dash, sophomore Jordan Amaku took second with a time of 57.68 followed closely by freshman Jordan Grady's third place mark of 57.14.
In the men's 60m dash, senior Jarrick Wright captured first-place and a time of 6.86 followed by Justin Jenkins in third (6.92) and Kristen Mitchell's mark of 7.13 in fifth.
In the men's 60m hurdles, Matthew Viverette continued his solid season with a third-place finish and time of 8.08 while another Sam Houston veteran, Alyssa Dooley, captured first in the mile run with a time of 5.03.93.
It was a big day for junior Ryan Saam who secured a personal-best of 8:47.74 in the 3000m and a second-place finish. It was Saam's second career-best captured this season; the other occurred in the mile.
Saam was followed by Palo Ponce's best mark of the season (8:50.04) in third-place and Logan Terry's personal-best of 8:55.77 in fourth-place.
The Kats next action will be the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. taking place on Feb. 26-27.
