Friday begins a big sports weekend on the Sam Houston campus as fans can take their pick of action at the baseball and softball diamonds, the football field or the tennis court.
Tennis leads the weekend off Friday with a 1 p.m. dual match with Central Arkansas at the McAdams Center.
The Bearkat baseball team that has posted wins over nationally-ranked opponents Rice, TCU, Texas Tech and Texas A&M this spring plays host to Northwestern State in a three-game Southland Conference series that begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
The SHSU football team holds its first full-contact scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium from 2 to 4 p.m.
And the Sam Houston softball team hosts Southland leading Lamar in a weekend league series that begins with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the Softball Complex.
The baseball team stands 18-8 after victories this week over No. 22 Texas A&M in College Station and McNeese Wednesday night in Huntsville.
Sam Houston stands 3-3 in league action while Northwestern State enters the series tied for second in the Southland standings with a 4-2 mark. The Demons are 12-11 this year.
The Bearkats and the Demons battle at 4 p.m. Saturday and complete the weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m.
The softball team is coming off an exciting 10-inning win over No. 12 ranked Baylor Tuesday night. The Bearkats, 15-17 for the year, defeated the Bears 4-3, scoring all four runs in the bottom of the 10th.
Lamar comes to Huntsville standing atop the Southland Conference standings with a 7-1 league mark. The Cardinals are 12-10 for the year. Sam Houston stands 4-5 in Southland action.
Head coach K. C. Keeler and his staff complete their second week of spring practice Saturday. The Bearkats, who return 12 starters and 51 total lettermen from last year's NCAA playoff team, have been working on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the past two weeks.
Saturday's scrimmage will be the first time the team has had full contact tackling work.
The Sam Houston tennis team will be seeing its first action since a match at McNeese State on March 15. Rain has caused two Bearkat matches to be postponed. The Kats will be looking to get back on the winning track against the Bears.
