
Coggins & Baros Earn Southland Awards

Sam Houston State swept the weekly softball awards with second baseman Alyssa Coggins being named Southland Conference softball hitter of the week and teammate Haley Baros earning Southland pitcher of the week.
Coggins and Baros both helped Sam Houston go 3-1 last week at the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock. The weekend was highlighted by a 2-0 shutout against Big 12 opponent Texas Tech. The Kats also posted two victories over Abilene Christian.
Coggins, a senior from Sealy, led the Bearkats at the plate with a .500 batting average, .571 slugging mark and a .533 on-base percentage. In four games, she went 7-for-14 with one double, one run scored and four RBI.
Baros went 1-1 in the circle with two saves. On Friday, the junior from Bay City, picked up a 12-4 win against Abilene Christian and got the save in the Bearkats' 2-0 shutout against Texas Tech.
Baros picked up her second save of the tournament against ACU on Saturday, as the Bearkats defeated the Wildcats 8-6 in nine innings in their second game.
She finished the week with six strikeouts in 11.2 innings and a 1.80 ERA.
Sam Houston begins Southland Conference play this Saturday and Sunday with a three-game weekend series against defending Southland regular season champion McNeese State. The series starts Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Bearkat softball complex.
