The Sam Houston softball team looks to keep its five-game winning streak going when the Bearkats head to Husky Field to face Houston Baptist in a three-game Southland Conference series this weekend.
The series begins with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and concludes with a 2 p.m. single game Sunday.
The Kats have climbed into third place in the Southland standings after a three-game sweep of Lamar in Huntsville two weeks ago and a doubleheader win over Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., last Saturday.
Defending champion McNeese State leads the league with five weeks remaining in the 2014 race. The Cowgirls stand 11-3. Lamar is in second place at 10-4. Sam Houston owns a 20-17 overall mark and are 9-5 in Southland play.
Houston Baptist stands seventh in the league with a 13-20 overall record and a 7-8 conference slate.
Catcher Tiffany Castillo and designated player Hillary Adams have had hot bats in conference play. In the Bearkats' 14 league games, Castillo is hitting .368 while Adams is right behind with a .364 average.
The long ball has been a big Bearkat weapon. The SHSU women have hit 32 home runs and five triples this season.
Adams leads the team with eight home runs. The junior owns the Sam Houston career record with 30 in her three years as a Bearkat. Adams set the SHSU single season record with 13 home runs last spring.
Castillo has seven home runs this year and a career total of 16. Shortstop Tayler Gray and first baseman Sarah Allison each have six.
For the year, right fielder Cecilia Castillo is hitting .349, Gray .342, third baseman Tori Koerselman .311 and second baseman Alyssa Coggins .311.
Following the series at HBU this weekend, Sam Houston will take on Texas A&M in College Station Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. then host the Bearkats' next-to-last home Southland series Friday and Saturday, April 18-19, against Abilene Christian.
