Three outs away from a Southland Conference sweep, the Sam Houston softball saw Houston Baptist rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Huskies defeated the Kats 3-2 Sunday afternoon.

The loss ended a seven-game Bearkat winning streak. The SHSU women stand 22-18 for the year and 11-6 in Southland action. HBU upped its record to 14-22 for the season and 8-10 in league play. Sam Houston swept Saturday's doubleheader to take the series win back to Huntsville.

Third baseman Tori Koerselman (2-for-3) and catcher Tiffany Castillo (2-for-4) led the Bearkats at the plate. Sam Houston totaled seven hits while HBU posted eight.

Castillo produced SHSU's first run with a solo homer to center field. After each team scored a run in the second inning, the both squads went scoreless for the next four frames.

Center fielder Jessica Slater reached third after a one-out single, a stolen base and Koerselman's second single. She scored on a ground ball by shortstop Tayler Gray to put SHSU up 2-1.

But, in the bottom of the seventh, Sam Houston gave up the tying run on a throwing error and HBU scored the winning run on a double by right fielder Victoria Granchelli.

Shelby Lancaster (7-6) took the loss in the circle for the Bearkats giving up eight hits to the 32 batters she faced.

Sam Houston ends its current road streak with a non-conference midweek game at Texas A&M Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

The Bearkats return to the Softball Complex Friday and Saturday for the next-to-last home Southland series. The Kats play host to Abilene Christian in a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday and a 12 noon single game on Saturday.
