Kats fourth at Southland Championship

The Sam Houston State women's golf team finished fourth at the 2014 Southland Conference Championship at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia. Freshman Paige Nelson led the way for the Bearkats, finishing tied for third.
Nelson had an outstanding first round and was tied for the tournament lead at one-under par on the 6,528-yard, par-72 course. Her second-round 80 put her in a tough position going into the final day but she rallied to shoot a 73 to close the tournament.
The Lamar Cardinals claimed their second consecutive Southland title, finishing six strokes ahead of runner-up Oral Roberts. Central Arkansas finished third and was led by individual medalist Sarah Brown, who shot a 69 in the final round to take the title.
Brown came from five shots back in the final round to edge ORU's Shinwoo Lee by one stroke.
The Bearkats spent the final round fighting off SFA for the fourth spot and ended up finishing two strokes ahead of the Lumberjacks. SFA freshman Piper Kyle finished tied with SHSU's Nelson in third place.
Sophomore Abigayle Corson (81-73-78-232) finished tied for 13th after her solid second round. Nicole Budnik (80-80-78-238) was 25th, Alisa White (79-84-78-241) was 34th and Brooke Fouts (75-83-87-245) was 44th.
