Cabra & Miner Named All-Southland

Sam Houston State golfers Zach Cabra and Albert Miner were named to the All-Southland team, while Cabra is the league's Newcomer of the Year. Head coach Brandt Kieschnick was named the Southland Coach of the Year.
Cabra is the third Bearkat, and second in as many years, to be tabbed newcomer of the year, joining teammate Logan Boatner (2013) and Ryan Polzin (2000).
The McKinney product, who appeared in 12 tournaments, placed in the top 10 six times, including wins at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate last September, the Sam Houston Harold Funston Invitational last October and the Southland Conference championship.
His three individual wins are the most in the conference. The junior from McKinney, Texas, averaged 72.03 strokes per round and recorded a league-low round of 62 at The Sam Hall Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Miss last September, helping him earn first-team all-conference accolades. Cabra was only one of two golfers to shoot par or better in all three rounds of the league tournament and finished at 6-under par (69-69-72¬–210).
Miner was second in the conference with seven top-10 finishes, one shy of Angles' eight. The two-time first-team all-conference member, Miner notched one medalist honor on the season with a win at the Arkansas-Little Rock First Tee Classic in March. The senior from Katy, Texas, tied for fourth at the conference championship with a 2-over par 218 (71-73-74). Miner averaged 73.00 strokes in 35 rounds with a low round of 67.
Kieschnick claimed coach of the year honors after just his second season at the helm. He led the Bearkats to three team titles on the year, including the Southland Conference championship. It is the first time the Bearkats have claimed the league title since 1994. With the title, Sam Houston earned the league's automatic bid to an NCAA regional, which will be the first Division I postseason trip for Sam Houston in program history.
Kieschnick is the first person in conference history to earn coach of the year and player of the year honors, having been tabbed player of the year in 1997 and 1999 while at Sam Houston. He is the third Bearkat coach to claim the distinction, joining Ronnie Choate (1990, 1994) and Walt Williams (1997).
Freshman Klein Klotz was named Honorable Mention in his first collegiate season. He had three top-10 finishes and finished the year with a 74.23 stroke average in 35 rounds.
The Kats will learn their NCAA Regional destination May 5 at 9:00 a.m. during the selection show on Golf Channel.
