The Sam Houston State men's and women's track & field programs took to Corpus Christi as the squads battled the rainy elements at the Islanders Dash in the process capturing 41 top three finishes including nine personal bests.
In the women's hammer throw, Adrienne Quillin captured a school record and facility record in a first place finish and mark of 191 ft. 8 inches. It would be the junior's third consecutive meet to capture a school record.
The Bearkats swept the top spots in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with freshman Ana Moreno taking first for the women (11:43.94) in her inaugural collegiate action in the event and junior Karl Schreiber capturing a personal best (9:46.66) after finishing over 25 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
In the women's long jump, SHSU took three top ten marks including junior Winnie Ileso's second place finisher, the highest of her collegiate career. Ileso's leap of 18 ft. 5.75 inches was also her longest of the 2014 season.
The junior would be followed closely by Kaylynne Wright's jump of 17 ft. 6.75 inches in sixth place and sophomore Frances Porter's distance of 16 ft. 3.75 inches – her longest jump since the 2013 SHSU Quadrangle & Combined Events – in a tenth place finisher.
Not to be outdone, the men would also take a trio of top ten spots in the event highlighted by freshman Simon Imagbe's (22 ft. 8 inches) first place finisher followed by sophomore Justin Jenkins (21 ft. 2 inches) in third and freshman Jay Roberson in sixth (19 ft. 11.5 inches).
In the 100 meter hurdles, senior Sabrina Starr (13.68) and Danielle Demas (13.76) captured the event's top two spots each claiming a personal best to lead the way for Sam Houston who had six athletes place in the top seven. Rounding out the field for SHSU was Allyson Pettit (fourth place; 14.55), Winnie Ileso (fifth place; 14.62), Frances Porter (sixth place; 15.16) and Nicole Jenrette (seventh place; 15.16).
In the men's 100 meter dash, the Bearkats took the top four spots including a personal best from Jarrick Wright to lead the way (10.62) followed by Kristen Mitchell's identical 10.62 mark. Rounding out the top four would be Rodney Jones (third place; 10.92) and Trevor Kubera (11.06).
In the women's 4x100 meter relay, the Bearkats' relay squad of Sabrina Starr, Elizabeth Ene, Danielle Demas and Lygia Foreman) took first with a time of 46.93 – the squad's top mark of the season – followed in second by teammates Kristian Austin, Winnie Ileso, Sunday Foster and Ruth Amaku at 47.72.
The men would also take the top spot in the 4x100 with Justin Jenkins, Kristen Mitchell, Rodney Jones and Jarrick Wright capturing a time of 41.69.
The day's top finishes would continue in the men's 400 meter dash with sophomores De'Quad Binder (49.04) and Dedrick Brooks (49.29) taking first and third respectively.
In the pole vault, freshman Garrett Larson placed first at a height of 15 feet while the women swept the top three spots led by Kara Whitson (12 ft. 2.5 inches) in first followed by Ashley Thomspon (11 ft. 8.5 inches) in second and Katelyn Wynn in third (11 ft. 2.5 inches).
The women's 800 meter run saw the Bearkats take two top three spots with Alyssa Dooley (2:14.22) in first and freshman Briana McCall (2:18.45) in third while in the triple jump, Kaylynne Wright continued the Kats great day with a first place distance of 37 ft. 11.25 inches.
SHSU added five more second place finishes courtesy of Nicole Aponte in the 1500 meter run (4:44.57), Jordan Grady in the 400 meter dash (58.23), Paula Smith in the high jump (5 ft. 5.25 inches), Ammaad McCarthy in the hammer throw (182 ft. 2 inches) and Kennedy Howard in the 800 meter run (1:59.76).
Six Bearkats were in competition in the men's 200 dash including Rodney Jones who captured a personal best of 21.05 in a first place finisher, senior Jarrick Wright in third at 21.46 followed by Kristen Mitchell in fourth at 21.48 amongst SHSU's top competitors.
The women's 400 meter hurdles would be no exception to the day's achievements as Sam Houston placed 1-2-3 led by Ruth Amaku (1:02.21) followed by a personal best and runner-up from Alexandria Kimble (1:04.03) and Danielle Demas (1:05.29) in third.
The Bearkats would replicate that feat in the men's triple jump sweeping the top three spots including senior Charles White in first place (48 ft. 0.75 inches), freshman Chris Jefferson in second (45 ft. 3 inches) and Simon Imagbe (44 ft. 9.50 inches).
For the women, sophomore Paula Smith grabbed a personal best in second (24.54) and senior Kristian Austin placed fourth (25.32).
Other top five notables included Palo Ponce in the 3000 meter run (fourth place; 9:08.33), Ashley Jenkins in the hammer throw (fifth place; 161 ft. 2 inches), Olivia Olguin's personal best in the 1500 meter run (fifth place; 4:56.57), Kalvin Singletary in the shot put (third place; 45 ft. 9.25 inches), Allyson Pettit in the high jump (fourth place; 5 ft. 2.25 inches), a personal best from Kristine Hanks in the discus throw (fifth place; 127 ft. 1 inch) and Kristian Austin in the 100 meter dash (fourth place; 12.22 seconds).
As only seemed fit, the Kats rounded out a successful day with first place finishes in the men's and women's javelin throw thanks to Elizabeth Lyssy (139 ft. 1 inch) and Jonathan Andrews (119 ft.) not to mention a stellar performance and personal best from Jay Roberson (115 ft. 10 inches) who took second.
Next up, the Bearkats will head west with the heptathletes and decathletes competing in San Angelo at the ASU Relays on Thursday before joining the remainder of the squad at the Wes Kittley Invitational in Abilene.
