SHSU Stays Atop Standings Heading Into Finals

There was just one rule repeatedly discussed heading into day two of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships – know what it takes to advance to the finals, and do it.
After surging out to a 20-point day one lead, the Sam Houston women's track & field squad put forth an equally impressive second day effort, upping their tally to 57 points and advancing 11 athletes into Saturday's finals from the Bill Stephens Track & Field Complex in Conway, Ark.
"Today, it was about setting up for a big day tomorrow," head coach David Self said. "We did the things we needed to do. We just need to go out (tomorrow) and take care of business."
SHSU leads second place Stephen F. Austin (53) by four points who is followed in third by Northwestern State (34).
In the heptathlon, SHSU took 10 points behind a PR point total from Nicole Jenrette (4,879) in third and second best collegiate tallies from Allyson Pettit (4,707) in fifth and Frances Porter (4,438) in ninth.
Sam Houston record-holder Alyssa Dooley and Nicole Aponte both qualified for tomorrow's 1,500-meter finals after first (4:25.39) and seventh (4:36.61) place finishes respectively.
Elsewhere, in the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore Danielle Demas (13.49) and senior Sabrina Starr (13.56) finished 1-2 to qualify for tomorrow's finals adding on to their tremendous outdoor campaigns.
Lygia Foreman secured her spot in tomorrow's finals after running 54.44 in the 400-meter dash. The junior won the event at the Southland Indoor Championships after finishing third one year ago at the outdoor conference meet.
The women's 400-meter hurdles trio of Ruth Amaku, Danielle Demas and Alexandria Kimble all punched their tickets to tomorrow's finals after going 4-5-6 at times of 1:00.95, 1:02.38 and 1:03.26. Demas's mark was also a PR.
Sophomore Paula Smith utilized a personal best 24.40 in the 200-meter dash to secure fifth place and advance. Also advancing was junior Lygia Foreman whose time of 24.19 was good enough for seventh and a spot in the finals.
Other notables included Ana Moreno's time of 11:41 in an 11th place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase; Winnie Ileso's fifth place mark (18 feet, 8 inches) and Khalaya Williams' tenth place finisher (17 feet, 11 ¾ inches) in the long jump as well as Elizabeth Lyssy's fifth place finish in the javelin throw at 146 feet, 10 inches.
"We're really set to do some good things," Self said. "We knew Stephen F. was going to have a good second day but at the same time, I think we set ourselves up really well. It's just a matter of going out and doing what you need to do."
The Bearkats will look to close out their second consecutive Southland Conference Championship tomorrow with the conclusion of the field events at 10 a.m. and the finals running events beginning at 2 p.m. Fans can follow live on the Southland Conference website or along at Twitter.com/BearkatSports.
