The Sam Houston men's track & field squad captured four top three performances and used a strong final day performance to claim 96 points and finish third amongst 13 teams at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships from Conway, Ark.
De'Quad Binder highlighted a successful day for the Bearkats as the sophomore defended his title in the 800-meter run to take home the gold behind a time of 1:50.93.
"I've been working real hard this year," Binder said. "I've learned a lot about the 8. It's only my third year doing it so to come this far, I'm really getting more confident every time I race it."
Charles White as a big part of the weekend's success capping off the three-day event with a first place finish and leap of 51 feet, 7 3/4 inches in the long jump.
Competing in just his third meet of the year, dual-sport athlete Andre Moseley took first place in the men's high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 9 inches. The sophomore's mark was also a personal best.
Kalvin Singletary got the finals started for the Kats using a strong performance to advance into the shot put finals. The freshman's throw of 47 feet, 11 inches was his longest of the outdoor season and good enough for eighth place.
In the men's 4x100 relays, Torrance Williams, Justin Jenkins, Rodney Jones and Jarrick Wright took home second place and a season-best time of 40.03 in the event.
As an encore, Jones competed in the 400-meter dash two events later placing second overall with a time of 46.31 and capturing a collegiate best in the process. The junior's big day would finish up in a sixth place finisher and time of 21.31 in the 200-meter dash.
"Everybody competed hard," Jones said. "I'm proud of everyone who came out here and competed for us. Congratulations to Southeastern. From last year running 47.30 to this year running 46.30, even though I ran second, I got a huge PR and it puts me in a good position to go to Regionals. Hopefully I'll have another PR and I'll be at Nationals."
Justin Jenkins made his presence known in the 100-meter dash as the speedy sophomore raced out to a time of 10.41 and secured a personal best in fifth place.
The Bearkats would finish the day in a 4x400-meter relay in ninth place finish behind the quartet of Dedrick Brooks, Jarrick Wright, De'Quad Binder and Rodney Jones at 3:20.27.
"It takes a lot of patience," Binder said. "I've pushed through the adversity (of a long season) going through it with my teammates. It's hard to have friends outside of track so my track friends are my brothers. Even though we didn't win today, I'm happy to see my sisters do great so I feel like we won all together."
