Auburn, Ala. – Freshman Klein Klotz highlighted Sam Houston's second day at the NCAA men's golf regional championships with a one-under-par 71.
Klotz's performance was one of only 12 sub-par rounds Friday on the 7,254-yard, par 72 course at Auburn Country Club.
As a team, the Bearkats dropped to 11th place with a 36-hole total of 300-303—603.
“We had a tough day but so did a lot of people,” Sam Houston head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “We're really proud of the round Klein had today. To break par on this course today was an outstanding accomplishment.”
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance from the regional to the finals May 23-25 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
The Bearkats trail fifth place BYU by 10 strokes.
“We've got one more round to go. We hoped to be in a better position going into the final round but we're going to give it everything we can tomorrow,” Kieschnick said. “We're competing against an outstanding field here at Auburn that includes some of the top teams in the national.”
Defending national champion Alabama leads the Auburn Regional after 36 holes. Auburn, Kennesaw State, Virginia Tech and BYU round out the top five.
Texas, North Carolina-Greensboro, Colorado, New Mexico and Louisville rank sixth through 10th. Sam Houston, UC-Davis, Alabama State and Saint John's round out the field.
For the tournament, Sam Houston's Zach Cabra stands 12th in the individual standings with a 71-75—146 two-day total. Klotz has moved up to 16th overall with a 76-71—147 score. Other Bearkat scores and standings are Albert Miner 77-77—154 (52nd), Logan Boatner 76-80—156 (58th) and Andrew Johnson 84-80—164 (73rd).
The NCAA Regional tournament final round will be played Saturday. Sam Houston will tee off on No. 10 from 8:20 to 9 a.m. The Bearkats will be paired with Louisville and UC-Davis.
Sam Houston's appearance in the tournament marks the men's golf program's first as a team in NCAA regional competition.
