Foreman named Student-Athlete of the Year

FRISCO -- Sam Houston State senior Lygia Foreman was named the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Thursday in conjunction with the 2013-14 All-Academic Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field teams.
Foreman becomes the first Sam Houston student-athlete to earn the award since Jennie Sewell (2006-07). The senior from Fort Worth, Texas (Eastern Hills H.S.), played a key component in bringing the Bearkats their fourth overall outdoor championship and first since 2008.
Foreman tied for the high point scorer at the outdoor championships after claiming gold in both the 200-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay and she also finished second in the 400-meter dash. Foreman made the Dean's List with a 3.44 GPA in kinesiology.
The men's all-academic team consists of 21 student-athletes including six automatic selections while the women's squad consists of 36 student-athletes including 17 automatic selections. Sam Houston led the conference with a combined 12 student-athletes on the all-academic team while UIW collected eight.
Stephen F. Austin had seven followed by McNeese State with five and Central Arkansas with four. Abilene Christian, Lamar, Northwestern State, Oral Roberts and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi each notched a trio while Houston Baptist, Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana had two apiece.
Nineteen student-athletes are making at least their second appearance on their respective teams including Sam Houston State's Alyssa Dooley, who has landed on the women's all-academic team for the fourth time in her career.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 14 member universities, votes for the student-athletes of the year. The student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics.
All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution. All-academic members earned at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, completed at least one full academic year and participated in at least 50 percent of the school's events.
