Carrie Hopkinson, a transfer who will join Sam Houston's NCAA National Championship women's bowling team this fall, represented her home country Canada in the Lee Evens Tournament of the Americas event this month.
The tournament featured players from countries in the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) competing for medals in singles, doubles, mixed doubles, mixed team and all-events. The Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas is the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone.
Hopkinson comes to Sam Houston as a transfer from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. The junior from Drumbo, Ontario in Canada. Hopkinson will have two years of eligibility at Sam Houston.
"I had a lot of fun this week meeting new people and seeing others I don't get to see often,” Hopkinson said. “It was tough this week and made me wish I prepared myself a little more, but I fought through the grind. It was my first adult tournament and I can only go up from here. It's an honor to have Canada on my back, but it's an even bigger honor to have the support from home."
Hopkinson has two years of NCAA Division I experience including a MEAC finals appearance at FAMU.
She also had national and international experience playing with the Team Canada junior team squad at the PABCON Youth Championships at the Dominican Republic and World Youth Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
“Carrie will be a great addition to our roster,” SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. “She has a passion for our sport and brings a competitive spirit and strong work ethic to the table.”
Sam Houston State defeated defending champion Nebraska in the NCAA Finals a month ago to bring home the university's first Division I natinoal title. In the bowling program's four-year history, the Bearkats have advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight three times and have been ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation in every regular season poll since the team's inaugural season in 2011.
