Kats gear up for final non-conference weekend

Sam Houston will host Utah State Friday at 6:30 p.m. and TCU Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in the Bearkats' final two non-conference games. Friday night will be another “Free Food Friday,” where the first 100 students in attendance can get free Wing Stop.
The Kats are back at Pritchett Field after a tough, 3-1, loss to top-10 ranked Texas Tech last week in Lubbock. Shelby McDaniel scored the lone goal for SHSU and now has a team-high two goals.
“We've had a very tough preseason with all of the games we've played against really good teams,” head coach Tom Brown said. “Texas Tech was No. 10 nationally at the time and they're seventh now. Being in those types of games definitely helps us see what might be weaknesses that we can start solving now before we get into conference play.”
This will be the first meeting between the Kats and Aggies, who are 2-2 this season with both wins coming at home. After scoring only one goal in their first two matches, Utah State has exploded for seven goals in its next two contests. Five different Aggies have found the back of the net, while sophomore forward Jessica Brooksby leads the team with three goals.
TCU is 3-3 with wins over Idaho, LSU and Abilene Christian. The Horned Frogs' three wins have all been shutouts but conversely, TCU has been shut out in two-of-three losses. TCU will play Friday night at Texas State before heading to Huntsville. The Kats are 0-3 all-time against TCU, with previous games being played in 2005, 2006 and 2010.
The Kats will continue their season-long home stand and open league play with Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word next weekend. Sam Houston will then host McNeese Sunday, Sept. 28 and Northwestern State the following Friday, Oct. 3.
