
SMU Mustangs next for Bearkat tennis

The Sam Houston women's tennis team travels to Dallas Friday for a non-conference dual match with SMU at 3 p.m. at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
The SMU women are coming off of a 2014 season in which they went 10-12 overall and 2-3 in the American Athletic Conference. SMU ended the regular season on a four-match winning streak, but fell to third-seeded South Florida in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
The Mustangs return all eight student-athletes from last year's roster and had an impressive fall season, as seven of the eight posted winning records in singles.
Sam Houston State opened the season with a 4-3 loss to UT-Pan American Sunday.
Karen Martinez and Maddie Mortimore earned victories in singles for the Bearkats. In doubles, Martinez teamed up with Olivia Battye and Mortimore teamed up with Mila Milanovic to give Sam Houston State the doubles point.
Friday marks the sixth women's tennis meeting between SMU and Sam Houston. The Mustangs have won all five previous matches. The pair met last year in Dallas, with the Mustangs earning a 5-0 victory.
SMU is led by Dasha Sharapova who earned all-conference honors. She went 10-5 during the fall tournament season. Sharapova lost to Sam Houston freshmen Fabienne Gettwart in the round of 32 at the ITA Regionals in Waco. Gettwart won 6-4 6-2 to become the first Bearkat to advance to the round of 16 at the regionals.
The Mustangs' Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner are ranked sixth in the ITA Texas region in doubles.
Sam Houston women's tennis returns home to the McAdams Tennis Center Friday February 6 when the Kats will play host to Texas-San Antonio in a 1 p.m. match.
