Box Score Hammond, La. – Led by guard Taylor Dorsey, the Sam Houston women's basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit to tie Southeastern Louisiana in the final 11 seconds only to fall 78-76 on a buzzer beater by the Lions Thursday night.
Jamieka Hospkins nailed the game-winner with no time left on the clock at the Lions earned their first Southland Conference victory. Southeastern Louisiana now stands 5-8 for the year and 1-1 in league play.
Dorsey posted a career high 27 points to lead Sam Houston. The performance marked the sophomore's third time to score more than 20 this season. The Bearkat women fall to 2-11 for the season and 1-2 in Southland action.
Erica Hernandez led Southeastern Louisiana with 25 points. Hoskins added 15 points.
The Bearkats and the Lions traded leads fivel times in the opening minutes of the game. Sally Clavelle gave the SHSU women their last lead of the first half with a bucket at the 12:42 mark to put the Kats up 20-18.
Southeastern Louisiana finished the first half with a 22-14 run to take a 40-34 lead into the locker room at intermission.
The Lions held a 73-58 lead with seven minutes remaining. Saundra Guillory's field goal and free throw started an 18-3 run for the Bearkats. Dorsey's jumper tied the game at 76-76 with 11 seconds to play.
Junior post player Shedijah Moore also scored in double figures with 13 points and led both teams with 14 rebounds.
Sam Houston will continue it's Louisiana road trip Saturday afternoon when the Bearkats play against the Privateers of New Orleans.
