Softball Begins "Fall Ball" This Weekend

With a roster dotted by 12 new faces, head coach Bob Brock and his staff begin preseason workouts for the coming 2016 Sam Houston softball season this weekend.
The Bearkats will play the first of a slate of “Fall Ball” exhibition games Sunday afternoon at 12 noon with a doubleheader against Blinn Junior College at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
“We're starting fall practice a little bit later than we have in the past in order to get the date with Texas A&M,” Brock said. “There's a lot of newcomers on the roster this year. Everyone is excited to get started.”
Four starters in the field plus two pitchers and four other players who saw action in roles last year return. The starters include seniors catcher Tiffany Castillo, outfielder Jennie Kieval and infielders Dani Allen and Peyton Webb.
“We're going to depend on our seniors for strong leadership this year,” Brock said. “We've got a lot to get done.”
Other returning letter winners include outfielders Ashley Kopps and infielders Casey Sax, Hannah Marion and Delaney Neal.
Sophomore Jordan Franks and junior Taylor Atkinson return in the circle as pitchers who three in 15 and 25 games last year, respectively.
Joining the pitching staff this season are transfer Brooke Seneshen from Baylor and freshmen Lindsey McLeod from Austin / Westlake and Kennedi Fisher from Lake Jackson / Brazoswood.
“We are looking for our pitching to be a team strength this year,” Brock said. “We're anxious to see how they perform against outside competition.”
Joining the team in the outfielder are freshmen Ashley Lockamy from Adklins / Roosevelt, Bailey Watson from Montgomery and Samantha Belonigia from Coldspring.
New infielders include transfer Katie Doerre from Texas State and Erin Alaniz from Houston Baptist and freshmen Codi Carpenter from Magnolia, Samantha Cueller from Kingsville, Emily Bounds from Moody, and Ashley Goetz from Georgetown.
Following Sunday's doubleheader, Sam Houston is scheduled to play fall exhibition games at Angelina in Lufkin on Friday October 16; the Houston Cougars in Houston on Saturday, October 17; Galveston Junior College in Houston Sunday, October 18; McClennan Junior College in Huntsville on Saturday, November 7 and Texas A&M in College Station on Sunday, November 15.
